MultiAlarm — aka iBookAlarm

14. Apr 2006 Comments 36 comments

Well guys with the help of a anonymous commenter i have added a checker to see what machine the program is running on, this means that the program will work natively on both iBook and PowerBook

Please try both if you have a powerbook

UPDATE : 2 version both for growl but one for hirespb

UPDATE: I have added a check function to see if growl is running, this should prevent failure to work on systems with out growl. The program should also work on powerbooks and ibooks(not sure about hi res powerbooks though)

UPDATE: I have recieved reports of this version not working on the powerbooks, when you report a error or bug please tell me the make and model of the laptop and if you have growl installed

I hate to break the ball, but it doesn’t work on my powerbook

  2. semaja2 wrote on 14. Apr 2006

ok well its good to get feed back, other wise i would never know it didnt work.

if you could run this cmd and tell me what your get outputted in terminal that would be great

    /usr/sbin/system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | /usr/bin/grep ‘Machine Name’ | /usr/bin/colrm 1 20

  3. Nick wrote on 14. Apr 2006

Ok, so it somewhat starts up, but then it asks to locate GrowlHelperApp.app so not quite sure what that means. But let me know when a new version is up and i will go ahead and try it. Thanks for the positive progress.

So I did the test in my terminal, and this is what I got. Hope I did it correctly.

grep: Name’: No such file or directory

  5. semaja2 wrote on 15. Apr 2006

thanks nick for doing that, i dont think you copied the cmd correctly, but from what you reported earlier it indicates that you dont have growl installed?

  6. Nick wrote on 15. Apr 2006

Correct. I did not have it installed. I just finished installing it. I am able to start IBookAlarm, but it does not seem to actually “Alarm” . It says it is “Primed” but does not seem to go off and or such. Any recommendations?? Would you like me to test anything with it.

  7. semaja2 wrote on 15. Apr 2006

first off thanks for the quick reply, now if its not actually alarming it could be that theres no SMS on your powerbook, goto system profiler and tell me if it says SMS activated

  8. Nick wrote on 15. Apr 2006

I am not seeing SMS Activated anywhere on my system profiler.

  9. semaja2 wrote on 15. Apr 2006

ok umm can you get me the model including when it was built, also try running this cmd again and lets hope this one works

    /usr/sbin/system_profiler SPHardwareDataType

if that one works try this as well

    /usr/sbin/system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | /usr/bin/grep ‘State’

  10. Nick wrote on 15. Apr 2006

    First One Gave Me:Hardware Overview:

    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 15″
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.5 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1.25 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.8.4f1

    Second gave me:
    /usr/sbin/system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | /usr/bin/grep \342\200\230State\342\200\231

  11. semaja2 wrote on 15. Apr 2006

ok well theres good and bad news, by the looks of it your powerbook doesnt have teh SMS sensors, now the good news tho isnt for you but for me that second cmd didnt get copied correctly, you see all that 342\200\230 change that into ‘ same with 342\200\231

    so it looks like this

    /usr/sbin/system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | /usr/bin/grep ‘State’

    not this

    /usr/sbin/system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | /usr/bin/grep \342\200\230State\342\200\231

  12. Nick wrote on 15. Apr 2006

I tried that and changed it as requested and got absolutely nothing. It just gave me another prompt line. No data at all. So since my computer does not have sms sensors that basically means that the software will not work. Is there anyway to get it to work with out the sensors and just go off when the keyboard is touched or mouse is moved ect.

  13. semaja2 wrote on 15. Apr 2006

well nick sorry to hear that you dont have the sensors, unfortuantly im not working on the other activations just yet, but with what you told me and those cmd results i will hopefully be able to add a SMS check so you guys will know whats going on

  14. Nick wrote on 15. Apr 2006

Thanks for your help with everything. Shoot me a email if you hear of anything that would work on my system.

  15. semaja2 wrote on 15. Apr 2006

I have just uploaded a new version that should work on the system even if growl is not installed

  16. Chase wrote on 15. Apr 2006

i tried it (i have sms on my powerbook and its activated) and nothing happens once i open the program

  17. semaja2 wrote on 15. Apr 2006

thanks for the reply but i need more infomation, things like:

    do you have growl installed
what machine is it, powerbook hi-res?
    etc

  18. Chase wrote on 15. Apr 2006

    the 1.67ghz 17″

and i thought it didnt matter if we had growl with the newest version?

  19. semaja2 wrote on 15. Apr 2006

it shouldnt matter, now all powerbooks have been giving me trouble with this so im going to release a new version, one for hirespowerbook and one for the normal powerbook

    check back in 2 min

  20. Chase wrote on 15. Apr 2006

    excellent. i’ll be here.

  21. semaja2 wrote on 15. Apr 2006

if you have a powerbook please try both

  22. Chase wrote on 15. Apr 2006

  23. semaja2 wrote on 15. Apr 2006

excellent, i sent you a email so i can get some infomation about what version and what machine you have/used etc.

  24. Chase wrote on 15. Apr 2006

    cool, i’ll check

  25. Chase wrote on 15. Apr 2006

a couple features i’d like to see:

    - when you disable it, have the volume go back to normal
    - change the sound effects to what ialertu uses:
    – 1 of the beeps when enabled
    – 2 beeps when disabled

  26. semaja2 wrote on 15. Apr 2006

ok chase i can changed the sound effects to what they use and i was going to but i dont know about legality(i guess they are genric sounds)

the idea of 2 beeps and the volume, will come when i finish making menus

  27. SuGaR wrote on 16. Apr 2006

Sorry, I wanna use this app on my ibook, but how can i do ?
I download that and double click it, it also shows icon, please help,
    Do you have readme download?

  28. semaja2 wrote on 16. Apr 2006

When you download and run the correct version, see post “MultiAlarm — Source Code and Application” for more info

After you download the correct version run it and your ibook should make a sound to signal its been activated, after that just try it by moving your iBook

PS. You need to be sure your ibook has SMS activated (My iBook G4 mid 2005 model has it)

  29. SuGaR wrote on 16. Apr 2006

thanks, I hear the signal, but moving it ,doesn’t work,
    What is SMS activated?
    where can I find that?

  30. semaja2 wrote on 16. Apr 2006

umm sounds like SMS is acting up, try putting this cmd into terminal and send me the exact output

    /usr/sbin/system_profiler SPHardwareDataType

Also could you find out what revision/model of your iBook so i can research to find out if you ibook has SMS

  31. SuGaR wrote on 16. Apr 2006

    Hardware Overview:

    Machine Name: iBook G4
    Machine Model: PowerBook6,5

  32. semaja2 wrote on 16. Apr 2006

Thanks for the info, it will be a while until i get to working on your case but its on the todo list

  33. semaja2 wrote on 16. Apr 2006

sorry sugar but i dont think your machine has SMS, from what i know it was introduced to the iBooks in the mid 2005 models, yours is the Early 2004 model i beleive

  34. Tim wrote on 21. Apr 2006

Hey, this is a great program first of all. I do have a few questions though. For the iBooks, is the alarm supposed to reset as soon as it is set back down? Second, is the screen supposed to flash for the iBooks or is that just the hires powerbook?

I know my iBook has the SMS. I bougt it in August.

  35. Tim wrote on 21. Apr 2006

OK, scratch the part about the flashing. I got that to work

  36. semaja2 wrote on 22. Apr 2006

the alarm will deactivate when the ibook is placed back into the orginal position, once we work out the new beta versions bugs i will add the password check so the alarm does not deactivate on its own, the screen will flash if you enable it in Universal Access in the prefences of macosx

    Btw thanks for the comment
