Email: The Weakest Link

Last night me and Tom were discussing how obtaining access to someones email address can and often is the door way to destroying someones life.
If you think about it, someone signs up to say PayPal using their email account at hotmail, they also sign up to other services like forums and blogs, and possibly stuff they dont want anyone else to know about
and lets assume this person has some sense of security and uses different passwords for each site.
If for some reason you wanted to either become rich, or wanted to destroy that persons life all you would have to do is get access to the email account at hotmail and learn some basic facts about that person. It is usually very easy to also get access to someones email as they might trust someone with the password *never trust someone* or it was picked up with a key logger for example.
Now that you have access to that persons email account, you can now go to PayPal login and press the “i forgot my password” PayPal now sends you *them* the reset email, you click on the link and enter the basic information and start draining that money *obviously not using a computer you can be tracked to* Step 2: Rinse and repeat for the other sites.
So in short your email address is the weakest link and should be kept as secure as possible, i always try to limit my use of web interfaces especially on a public access machine just incase.
PS. Sorry for the ramble that may not make sense ![]()
